Audi S4: History and Production

The Audi S4 is a high-performance sports sedan that has been in production since 1991. It is a variant of the Audi A4, specifically designed to offer enhanced performance and handling. Throughout its history, the Audi S4 has undergone several generational updates and design changes to keep up with advancements in technology and automotive trends.

The first-generation Audi S4, known as the Audi 100 S4, was produced from 1991 to 1994. It featured a turbocharged 2.2-liter inline-five engine and introduced Audi’s famous quattro all-wheel drive system to the S4 lineup.

The second-generation S4, produced from 1997 to 2002, offered improved performance with a twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 engine. It also showcased Audi’s innovative five-link suspension system and featured a more refined design compared to its predecessor.

In 2003, Audi introduced the third-generation S4, which was produced until 2008. This model featured a powerful 4.2-liter V8 engine and continued to utilize the quattro all-wheel drive system. The third-generation S4 received positive reviews for its impressive performance and luxurious interior.

The fourth-generation Audi S4 was produced from 2009 to 2016. It marked a shift to a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine, which offered improved fuel efficiency without sacrificing performance. The fourth-generation S4 also introduced various technological advancements, including Audi’s MMI infotainment system and driver assistance features.

From 2017 onwards, Audi introduced the fifth-generation S4, which is the current version as of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021. It features a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine, further refining performance and efficiency. The fifth-generation S4 continues to embrace Audi’s commitment to advanced technology, offering a range of cutting-edge features and driver assistance systems.

Windshield Replacement Options and Manufacturers

When it comes to windshield replacement for the Audi S4, it’s important to choose high-quality glass from reputable manufacturers to ensure proper fit and performance. Some well-known manufacturers that produce windshields for the Audi S4 include Pilkington, Saint-Gobain Sekurit, and Guardian Industries.

When replacing the windshield, there are a few options to consider. Firstly, you can choose between an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) windshield or an aftermarket windshield. OEM windshields are manufactured by the same company that supplied the original windshield for your Audi S4, ensuring an exact match in terms of fit and quality. Aftermarket windshields, on the other hand, are produced by third-party manufacturers and may offer a more cost-effective alternative.

Additionally, you can opt for different features during windshield replacement. Some common features include tinted glass, acoustic or noise-reducing glass, and rain-sensing wipers. Tinted glass can provide additional protection against harmful UV rays and improve privacy. Acoustic glass helps reduce external noise, resulting in a quieter cabin. Rain-sensing wipers automatically adjust their speed based on the amount of rainfall detected on the windshield, enhancing convenience and safety during inclement weather.

ADAS Features and Recalibration

The Audi S4 is equipped with various advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) designed to enhance safety and convenience on the road. While specific features may vary depending on the model year and trim level, some common ADAS features found in the Audi S4 include:

  1. Lane Departure Warning: This feature uses cameras or sensors to monitor the vehicle’s position within the lane and provides visual or audible alerts if the vehicle drifts out of its lane without the use of turn signals.
  1. Forward Collision Alert: This system uses radar or camera sensors to detect the distance between the Audi S4 and the vehicle ahead. If a potential collision is detected, the system alerts the driver through visual and audible warnings, urging them to take appropriate action.
  2. Adaptive Cruise Control: This feature combines traditional cruise control with radar or camera sensors to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. It automatically adjusts the speed of the Audi S4 to match the flow of traffic, reducing the need for constant manual adjustments.
  3. Blind Spot Monitoring: Using sensors or cameras, this system detects vehicles in the blind spot areas and alerts the driver through visual indicators, usually located in the side mirrors or the instrument cluster. It helps prevent lane-change collisions.
  4. Rear Cross-Traffic Alert: When the Audi S4 is in reverse, this system warns the driver of approaching vehicles or pedestrians crossing behind the vehicle. It utilizes sensors or cameras to monitor the rear area and provides visual or audible alerts if potential obstacles are detected.
  5. Parking Assistance: This feature assists the driver in parking the Audi S4 by utilizing sensors or cameras to detect obstacles and provide visual and audible guidance during maneuvers. It may include features such as front and rear parking sensors and a 360-degree camera system.

When replacing the windshield on an Audi S4 equipped with ADAS features, it’s essential to perform recalibration of the affected systems. Windshield replacement can disrupt the proper functioning of ADAS sensors and cameras, as their alignment and calibration may be affected. Recalibration ensures that these systems function accurately and maintain their intended functionality.
