Lane Departure Warning Systems
Many newer vehicles come with systems that can exert some control over steering. One of those systems is the Lane Departure Warning. This Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) is designed to prevent collisions typically caused by driver error, distractions and drowsiness.
The system is meant to intervene at the last moment before a lane departure occurs to keep the vehicle within its lane. Although this system is not designed to steer a car without a driver’s input, it does use a video camera to detect lane markings ahead of the vehicle and to monitor the vehicle’s position in its lane. Unless a turn signal is on in that direction, when the system detects the vehicle is about to unintentionally move out of its lane while on freeways and arterial roads, it alerts the driver when the car approaches or crosses lane using visual, audible and/or tactile signals, such as steering wheel vibration.
Issues with Lane Departure Warning Systems
The system can be confused by multiple markings painted during road construction, lane lines that are faded or covered by snow, markings that suddenly disappear or merge as lanes come together, or if the camera lens is blinded by direct sunlight. Further, it does not always recognize potholes, disabled vehicles, pedestrians running near the roadway or bicyclists that may cause a driver to intentionally cross a lane line without using a turn signal. This, of course, activates the warning audible signal and vibration of the steering wheel. Should the driver find this system annoying, it can be switched off by usually pushing a button (featuring a symbol with lane lines and a car crossing a line) or make a selection in a vehicle menu.
Drivers are advised to experience this system during an extended test drive if they expect to use them, as well as read the owner’s manual to learn about their limitations and idiosyncrasies.
